Computerized fluid dynamical analysis is becoming an integral part of the design process in a growing number of industries.

The combination of increasing computer speeds and more efficient numerical algorithms continually increase the range of flow phenomena that can be considered. This inevitably manifests a need for more complex physical models, which in turn raises the need for the CFD practitioner to understand the origins of the model. The mathematical properties and predictive accuracy of the models must be assessed to determine whether a particular model is suited to computing a given flow phenomena.

 

The Applied Fluid Mechanics group at FFI focuses on fundamental as well as applied problems in an attempt to ensure trustworthy results with sufficient accuracy for a given problem. Commercial and non-commercial CFD codes are used, supplemented with FEM codes when fluid/structure interaction problems are considered.

 

Visualization and analysis of three-dimensional data is also an active field of research, through the texture-based volume render Voluviz, developed within the group.

 

Comparison with experimental results is an important part of the
validation process, and the group has access to data from a wide range of experimental facilities. In addition, a wind tunnel designed for evaporation experiments is under construction at FFI.
