John-Mikal Størdal (born 1965)

 

John-Mikal Størdal is Director General of FFI. He holds a Master of Science degree in aeronautics and astronautics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, and a Diploma Engineering degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTNU). His areas of expertise are systems engineering, navigation, underwater warfare, and battle and fire control systems.


Mr. Størdal joined FFI in 1989. He has extensive experience as a researcher, as Director of Research and as Division Director of various FFI divisions. In 2009 Mr. Størdal attended the Senior Executive Course at the Norwegian National Defence College. Since 2012 he has been the Norwegian representative on the EDA R&T Steering Board and the NATO Science and Technology Board (STB). Mr. Størdal was Chief of Staff until he was appointed Director General of FFI in 2012. 

 

 

 

Jan Erik Torp (born 1963)

 

Jan Erik Torp is Chief of Staff of FFI. He holds a Cand.scient. degree in geophysics from the University of Bergen. His areas of expertise are simulation supported operational analysis, security policy, and risk and vulnerability analysis.


Mr. Torp joined FFI in 1987. He has extensive experience as a researcher, as Director of Research and as Division Director of various FFI divisions. In 2008 Mr. Torp attended the Senior Executive Course at the Norwegian National Defence College. Mr. Torp was Director of the Maritime Systems Division until he was appointed Chief of Staff in 2012.

 

 

 

 

​Espen Skjelland (born 1965)

 

Espen Skjelland is Director of the Analysis Division. He holds a Cand. scient. degree in computer science from the University of Oslo. His areas of expertise are security policy, economy, and operational analysis.


Mr. Skjelland joined FFI in 1990. Between 1995 and 2002 he held various positions in the Norwegian Ministry of Defence – as adviser, deputy director general, and Chief Secretary of the Defence Policy Commission. Between 2003 and 2009 he was Director of Research of FFIs Analysis Division. Mr. Skjelland has held his current position since 2009.

 

 

 

 

​Anders Eggen (born 1965)

 

Anders Eggen is Director of the Cyber Systems and Electronic Warfare Division. He holds a Cand.scient. degree in computer science from the University of Oslo. His areas of expertise are information systems, network, and security. Mr. Eggen has extensive experience from a variety of NATO research groups, both as a member and leader. In 2014 he attended the Senior Executive Course at the Norwegian National Defence College.


Mr. Eggen joined FFI in 1992. He has been holding positions as researcher, research manager and Director of various FFI divisions. Mr. Eggen has held his current position since 2014.

 

 

 

 

​Jon Skjervold (born 1957)

 

 

Jon Skjervold is Director of the Land Systems Division. He holds a PhD in theoretical astrophysics from the University of Trondheim (NTNU), and his areas of expertise are signature management and electronic warfare.

 
Dr. Skjervold joined FFI in 1984 and has held various positions in different research areas. He was Deputy Director General in 1999–2004 and has extensive experience as Director of Research of various FFI divisions. In 2004–2005 Dr. Skjervold served as a Special adviser at the Allied Command Transformation (ACT) in USA. He acted as coordinator for FFI’s international collaboration in the period 2005–2014. In 2013 he attended the Information Course at the Norwegian National Defence College. Dr. Skjervold has held his current position since 2014.

 

 

 

 

Elling Tveit (born 1962)

 

Elling Tveit is Director of the Maritime Systems Division. He holds a Cand.scient. degree in applied mathematics from the University of Bergen. His areas of expertise are underwater acoustics and underwater warfare.


Mr. Tveit joined FFI in 1987. He has extensive experience as a researcher and as Director of Research, and he has also spent a year at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in San Diego. Between 2004 and 2012 Mr. Tveit was the Norwegian representative in NATO’s Undersea Research Centre Scientific Committee. In 2009 he attended the Information Course at the Norwegian National Defence College. Mr. Tveit has held his current position since 2012.

 

 

 

 

Johnny Bardal (born 1956)

 

Johnny Bardal is Director of the Air and Space Systems Division. He holds a Master of Science degree in technical cybernetics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTNU). His areas of expertise are navigation, weapons of precision, and battle and fire control systems.


Mr. Bardal joined FFI in 1981. He has worked as a researcher, as Director of Research and Director of various FFI divisions. He has extensive work experience from other research institutions, including a researcher position at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, two director positions at Ericsson Radar AS, and management consultant positions at Carta Booz-Allen & Hamilton AS and Avenir AS. Mr. Bardal has held his current FFI position since 2014.

 

 

 

 

Janet Martha Blatny (born 1966)

 

Janet M. Blatny is Director of the Protection and Societal Security Division. She holds a PhD degree in biotechnology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Her areas of expertise are biotechnology and microbial genetics. She has broad experience within CBRNE defense (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive substances).


Dr. Blatny joined FFI in 2003 and has served as a researcher and research manager at the Protection and Societal Security Division. Prior to FFI, she worked as a post doc and research scientist at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). Through her extensive international network also within EU and NATO, Dr. Blatny has established several collaboration projects between FFI and various military and civilian participants within the areas of societal security, preparedness, and threat assessment. In 2009 she attended the Senior Executive Course at the Norwegian National Defence College. Dr. Blatny has held her current position since 2014. 

 

 

 

​Torunn Øvreås (born 1962)

 

Torunn Øvreås is Director of the Strategy and Planning Unit. She holds a Master of Science degree in electrical and electronics engineering from North Dakota State University, USA, and an engineering degree in automation from Bergen University College. Her fields of expertise are security and communication technology.


Mrs. Øvreås joined FFI in 2005 and has worked as a researcher and research manager at the Cyber Systems and Electronic Warfare Division prior to her current position. In addition, she has extensive research and work experience from KONGSBERG ASA where she served as Division Director of Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace and as Director of Kongsberg Defence Communication. Mrs. Øvreås has held her current FFI position since 2014.
