The primary task of the Air and Space Systems Division is to contribute to the modernization of the Air Force. The Division also contributes to developing important joint capabilities in the Armed Forces.
  • Combat Aircraft
  • Air Surveillance
  • Airborne Surveillance
  • Ground Based Air Defence
  • Missiles
  • Space
  • Radar
  • Electro Optics
  • Unmanned Air Systems

This is accomplished through applied research and development. This implies that we support the Air Force materiel programs from ideas and concepts, to development and procurement, and through lifecycle support. Our contributions are matched to requirements evolving over the lifetime of the systems. The goal is to ensure necessary military performance and cost effective sustainment.

The division is focused on combat aircraft operations, surveillance, air defence and missiles. We are also working to support timely and cost effective introduction of satellite support to the Armed Forces.

The division encompasses a wide span of technology areas with special emphasis on radar and electro optical technologies, as these are vitally important for military operational capabilities. We also have extensive international cooperation within these technology areas.

Looking to the future, we expect that unmanned and autonomous platforms will play an important role. Our Division is addressing this development through research and development on unmanned aerial systems with a goal to support introduction of operational unmanned capabilities in a timely manner.

Our activities are organized into projects, usually lasting three years. Projects are often run collaboratively between FFI and the Armed Forces, where a close relationship is established between FFI personnel and military officers assigned to specific projects.
