Due to vehicles on idling during cold weather, a lot of exhausts are deposited over Rusta camp
in Bardufoss. Problems have been reported concerning indoor smell and employees feeling sick
because of the exposure to exhaust. In order to clarify whether employees are exposed to
hazardous concentrations of components in exhaust, the Norwegian Defense Research
Establishment (FFI) has been asked by the Defence Staff to perform air measurements.
The results show that personnel may potentially be exposed to concentrations of oil mist that
exceed the current occupational exposure limit value. In some situations exposure to high
concentrations of nitrous oxides (NO and NO2) may occur. High concentration of copper was
detected in dust in the air in the breathing zone of one person inside the COB hall. This person
was working inside a workshop container which contains dust from welding and soldering. The
CO concentration was below the occupational exposure limit value, and the measured level of
COHb was low.
It is recommended to consider the use of respiratory protection to reduce exposure to oil mist,
dust and metals during prolonged work around vehicles on idling and during work inside the
workshop container. In certain situations it may also be necessary to use protection against NO
and NO2. Engine heaters should be used to prevent large emissions when starting the vehicles
in cold weather. It should also be evaluated whether ventilation should be installed or improved.
