We have designed and implemented a communication layer for message transport between units of Battlefield Management Systems (BMS). User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) over Internet Protocol (IP) are used for the data transport. Tactical radios operating as a Mobile AdHoc NETwork (MANET) are used as the lower network layers. This communication layer was used by project TEKNISK during Concept Development & Experiment (CD&E) at Rena Camp October 2008. Additionally we have developed software for measuring transmission range, for user data, for radio systems that support IP-traffic. This document reports on lessons learned during the experiment as well as subsequent measurement with one wireless network card (IEEE 802.11) and three tactical radio systems.
