Logistics and support services constitute the resources from which military activities rely on, and are vital for accomplishing military operations. Logistics is a force multiplier, and is an integral part of the Norwegian Defence. However, “logistics and support” are broad terms, and there is a need for a concrete description of what the concept entails. In this report we have used the definitions from NATO and the Norwegian Armed Forces Joint Operational Doctrine (2007), and based on this composed a classification of logistics and support services based on who executes the services. The logistics services are categorised according to six different functions; supply services, infrastructure function, movement and transportation services, maintenance and repair function, medical services, and administrative services. The six functions are then described in more detail, so that all aspects of the logistics and support concept are covered. Supply services covers all materiel and items used in the equipment, support and maintenance of military forces (all classes). The supply function includes the determination of stock levels, provisioning, distribution and replenishment. Transportation is the means of conveyance to move forces, equipment, personnel, and stocks, and includes the requisite materials handling equipment, as well as movement control. Maintenance means all actions to retain materiel in, or restore it (repair) to a specified condition. Repair includes all measures taken to restore materiel to a serviceable condition in the shortest possible time. Infrastructure logistics includes all activities related to establishing, developing, maintaining and running the military base. Medical services defines the process of procurement, storage, movement, distribution, maintenance and disposition of medical materiel, including blood and blood products, in order to provide effective medical support and the application of this process in planning and implementation. Included in administrative services are personnel services, economic and material management, and host nation support. This report will be a reference point in the forthcoming work in project 1105 Logistics and Support 2020 (LOGOS) at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment. The project’s aim is to provide the armed forces with background studies and give advice in developing a new logistics concept within a long-term perspective, and generally contribute in the development of the logistics for the Norwegian Armed Forces.
