Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) continues to develop Naval Strike Missile (NSM) for new
weapon platforms. This report contains test results for impulse noise for personnel firing the missile.
Three missiles were launched:
1. From truck at Andøya
2. From truck at Point Mugu, USA
3. From frigate ramp at Point Mugu, USA
MIL-STD-1474D is an American military standard that sets maximum levels for impulse noise
related to number of shots fired and hearing protection used. We have examined the impulse noise
levels at different positions for personnel firing the missile.
The results can be seen in Figure 3.1–3.3. According to MIL-STD-1474D one may launch 100
missiles a day using either plugs or muffs at all positions we have measured, except directly under
the missile path.
