Dr Tone Danielsen is principal researcher at FFI, since 2008. Her current studies are on cultural and structural changes in military organisations, and targeting, leadership and decision making in military operations. She has done extensive research on special operations forces throughout 7 years.

She now works on cultural changes in the Army (implementing the new officer and other rank structure) and helicopter units (transforming conventional units to become SOFish).

Danielsen received her Doctor Philosophiae in social anthropology from the University of Oslo, and was visiting fellow at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. Her doctoral dissertation Making warriors in the Global Era – An anthropological study of Institutional Apprenticeship was based on 18 months fieldwork in the Norwegian Naval Special Operations Commando.

Special operations forces are known as closed communities, and so very few ethnographic studies have been conducted in these units. The thesis provides thick descriptions of military apprenticeship, how Norwegian naval special operators – Marinejegers – are selected, socialised, trained, and educated, and live their everyday lives. It describes military disciplinary processes, and analyses bodily practices, discourses, and meanings within the framework of classic anthropological theory and recent scholarly works on military personnel.

The thesis contributes to methodological discussions and reflections on studies on elite groups and studies at home. Globalisation has changed the political use of armed forces, and military personnel have gained new roles and tasks. Analysing the making of Norwegian warriors sheds light on our own society and era, and gives some hard-programmed truths new perspectives.

Danielsen has worked as adviser in civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) and Joint Operations at the Norwegian Defence University College, senior adviser at the Norwegian Ministry of Defence working on concept and doctrine development, and researcher at the Oslo University College working on leadership and cross-cultural communication in Norwegian organisations.

Danielsen originally specialised in Middle Eastern Studies, focused on commercialising and politicizing of Syrian culture, identity, and religion in the global era. She lived and worked a decade in the Middle East and Mediterranean area.
